Final Exam Study Guide
Items 1-9 are worth 10 points each. If you can write 6-minute answers on the following questions / topics, you should do well on the final:
1) Compare the two waves of colonial expansion.
2) Where are we on the timeline today?
3) Why was it surprising that China and Russia were the first communist countries?
4) What was the Cold War and is it really over?
5) On what grounds does Strayer describe the 20thCentury as a period of crisis / collapse of European Enlightenment values?
6) How did European exploitation during the colonial era pave the way for economic disparities between wealthy nations and so-called “shithole” countries in post-colonial Africa?
7) What did you learn about the Atlantic Slave Trade and/or the experience of slavery from our student presentations?
8) What did you learn about gender inequality / women’s issues from our student presentations?
9) What was the Industrial Revolution? Why might one say that the Industrial Revolution was the most important thing that ever happened in human history?

Item 10 is worth 20 points and is a take-home question. Please bring your response to class on the day of the final.
10) Write a letter to: a) the president, b) a political candidate, or c) voters. Inform your reader about some important historical insight that you feel the president, candidate or voters should understand in order to make good decisions about a contemporary issue (such as immigration, trade, or issues of diversity or equality). You MUST quote Strayer in your letter. If it is helpful, you may refer to the Hallmarks, to the Living Justice handout, or to any other system of ethical or moral guidance to bolster your argument.
